Workplace Violence & Harassment Bill 168

 

Changes to the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) in 2010 now require employers in Ontario to take explicit steps to protect their employees from the possibility of Workplace Violence and Harassment.

 

On June 15, 2010, Bill 168 / OHSA Section 32.01 came into effect resulting in significant changes within the workplace. The Employer regardless is there is no threat of violence, must now do the following:

 

1. Conduct a Hazard Risk Assessment for Violence and Harassment

2. Prepare Policies with respect to Violence and Harassment

3. Develop and maintain Programs to implement these policies which must include measures to control risk, provide for assistance to be summoned immediately when violence occurs.

4. Provide information and instruction to workers on the content of these policies and programs

5. Communicate results of Hazard Risk Assessment, Policies, Program to the JHSC or Representative.

 

Failure to comply with the new legislation could result in fines and/or prosecution. Ontario Ministry of Labour Inspectors will be visiting businesses where the potential for violence and harassment to ensure compliancy is taking place!  At W.R.M Safety Solutions, we want to ensure you have the tools to meet the requirements of law!
